geo-textiles

Geotextiles have a wide application in in geotechnical as well as construction engineering. The application of geotextiles is constantly expanding with the traditional construction techniques. For more articles CLICK HERE

GEOTEXTILES:-

Geotextiles are synthetic or natural fibres that are used in construction to stabilize the soil and to prevent soil erosion. These are large sheet which are used in the construction of roads. These prevent the migration of sand particles and small aggregate.

These makes the poor soil to gain more strength and can be used for the construction of roads, dams etc. It decreases the degradation process of air and water.

Geotextile is a synthetic permeable textile material used to improve soil properties. It has the ability to separate, filter, strengthen, protect and weed when contacted with soil. Geotextiles are ideal materials for many infrastructure jobs, including roads, ports, landslides, drainage structures and other civil projects.

TYPES OF GEOTEXTILES:-

There are mainly three types of geotextile, They are
  • Woven geotextile
  • Non woven geotextile
  • Knitted geotextile

WOVEN GEOTEXTILE:-

The most common types of geotextile are woven types, which are made using techniques such as weaving of common garment fabrics. This type of feature is two sets of parallel threads or threads. Long-lasting yarn is called a warp and a vertical fabric.

NON WOVEN GEOTEXTILE:-

The non woven geotextile are made from continuous filament or staple  fibres.Bonding of fibers is done using thermal, chemical or mechanical means or a combination of techniques. These have a thickness of 0.5 to 1mm. But mechanical non woven fibres have 2 to 5mm

KNITTED GEOTEXTILES:-

Knitted geotextiles are made using another process adopted from the garment industry, namely knitting. In this process a set of loops of yarn interlock together. Only a few woven types are produced. All Knitted Geotextile is created using the Knitting Technique in combination with any other method of construction of Geotextiles like weaving.

APPLICATION OF GEOTEXTILE:-

The main application of geotextiles are separation, fluid transmission, reinforcement, filtration etc.

SEPARATION:-

Geotextiles are used as separators to prevent the mixing of particles from to  soil layers having different properties. These are commonly adopted in unpaved roads paved roads railways etc. They also provides local renforcement. Geotextiles sheet it are placed below the granular subbase. Therefore they require low maintenance. They also enable better compaction during construction.

FILTRATION:-

Depending on the permeability and accessibility of groundwater, geo-textiles can eliminate the kinetic energy of capillary uptake of groundwater and promote the lateral flow of drainage water. Geotextiles can be used in both vertical and horizontal applications, which helps solve drainage problems on roads and restrictions around homes.

REINFORCEMENT:-

Geotextiles with high strength are used as soil reinforcement materials. These have good corrosion resistance, high UV. The requirements of reinforcement materials depends upon the loading conditions and the life span of the structure. These are mainly used in area like foundation, retaining wall, slopes and embankments
